Santa Maria College was founded in 1938 by the Sisters of Mercy as a Catholic secondary college for girls. The College is still owned by the Sisters of Mercy, however in March 2005 the ascendancy of the College passed to the Mercy Board of Governance.

Santa Maria now has a defined management structure including a lay principal.
