Westnet joint owners and directors Barry Mitchell and Peter Brown have sold their Geraldton IT services company, Mitchell and Brown Corporate, to marketing and web development agency Market Creations Pty Ltd.
The sale was prompted by Mr Mitchell’s resignation as managing director of Mitchell and Brown Corporate, which will allow him to focus on the other activities of the larger Mitchell and Brown group.
Mr Mitchell joined the Geraldton-based Mitchell and Brown 13 years ago – when it owned a retail electrical goods store – and was keen to enhance its communications and computer involvement to take advantage of the 1990s computer boom.
An electrician by trade with a communications background, Mr Mitchell said he brought a technical side to the business that gave it the confidence to sell computers and communications to businesses.
Although the group’s interests are diverse, 80 per cent of its core business is retail sales which, Mr Mitchell says, is the company’s strength.
“We want to be really careful not to give any impression that our retail business is slowing down when in fact a big part of our decision to sell the corporate division was to give us more floor space to expand our retail floor from about 1,800 to beyond 2,200 square metres,” he said.
In retirement, Mr Mitchell plans to remain on the board of directors for Seacreast Corporation.
He also wants to venture into the fishing business and continue to run a charter business with his brother.
Mr Mitchell said he will also look after and manage some of the group’s other business activites.
“Our group owns Westnet and I am and will remain as an active director of Westnet along with the Brown family, Colin, Bernard and Peter,” he said.
