Panel approves Alchera’s $28m retirement village in Willagee
An assessment panel has approved a $28 million proposal to build a multi-storey retirement village in Willagee.
Alchera Living proposes to demolish 13 grouped dwellings on 40-44 Worley Street, to make way for a four-storey, 41-unit development for seniors over 55 years old.
At a meeting on Tuesday, the Metro Inner Development Assessment Panel unanimously approved Alchera Living’s $27.8 million application.
The application also comprises communal open space and associated car parking spaces.
“This is a well-conceived and articulated development,” the panel’s presiding member Karen Hyde said at the meeting.
The site on Worley Street houses an existing development, named Weeronga Retirement Village, that is also operated by Alchera Living.
In 2019, Alchera Living started a redevelopment of the north-western portion of the Willagee site to construct two- and three-bedroom apartment-style villas.
Dubbed the Reserve Apartments, the recently-approved development would form part of the existing Weeronga village, according to the development application compiled by Lateral Planning.
“The Reserve Apartments incorporate significant on-site occupant amenities (social centre, swimming pool, gym, games room, and library) and allow for ageing in place through removable shower screens, wheelchair accessibility and open plan living spaces,” the application read.
“Ageing in place is a part of the Alchera Living experience through life-leases for apartments and villas.”
According to the application, Alchera Living proposes to build a new social centre and administration building on the Willagee site by 2032 and a new piazza and bowling green by 2036.
