Property developer Mirvac Group is aiming to strengthen relationships with Western Australian charities as it works on a cohesive community investment strategy.

Since 2012, Mirvac has contributed almost $180,000 to community projects or charities in WA.

The most significant initiative has been the sponsorship of cinema series held at both its Meadow Springs and Peninsula developments.

From those two events nearly $50,000 was invested into community projects in the 2014 financial year, including a donation of $11,000 to the Mandurah Surf Life Saving Club to pay for new equipment and increase training capacity.

The demand for the Meadow Springs series last summer has resulted in Mirvac extending the program by an additional 10 nights this summer.

Mirvac sustainability group general manager Paul Edwards told Business News the company had launched a four-pronged sustainability strategy with one focus – community investment.

Out of that strategy had come an internal review of how Mirvac related to charities and establishment of a council to guide donations.

“The intention is that there will be a sum of money allocated to charity partners on a one or two-year basis so that we can start to grow relationships both regionally and nationally,” Mr Edwards said.

“We know that charities work better when they’ve got some consistency in where future income is coming from.”
