Laurence Escalante amends bail for Sydney trip

VGW founder Laurence Escalante has succeeded in changing his bail arrangements, to accommodate a Sydney trip next month.
Mr Escalante, who is facing a string of drug and assault charges, appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.
The gaming billionaire sought to change his bail arrangements, which included reporting to police weekly and to not leave Western Australia.
Magistrate Matthew Walton granted the changes to his bail for a 10-day period in late July, excusing Mr Escalante from a reporting session.
Defence counsel Simon Freitag told the court that Mr Escalante would be travelling to New South Wales to spend time with his mother, who lives there.
The court was told the prosecution consented to the bail variation.
Mr Escalante is facing charges of possession of cocaine with intent to sell or supply, possession of ecstasy with intent to sell or supply, and possession of prohibited drugs with intent or supply.
In addition to the drug offences, Mr Escalante is facing charges of aggravated home burglary, stealing, aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm, criminal damage or destruction of property and persistently engaging in family violence.
The charges related to an alleged incident involving a 24-year-old former partner that took place in her home on Australia Day, with the drugs allegedly found by police after they executed a search warrant on his house.
Mr Escalante was initially accused of eight charges relating to drug, family violence and burglary offences.
Nine charges relating to counts of possessing a prohibited drug, and counts of unlawfully possessing a controlled or prescription drug were added in February.
The matter will return to court in early August.
Mr Escalante previously vowed to defend the charges, in a personal statement released earlier this year.
He stepped down from his role as chief executive and chairman of VGW Holdings while the court case is ongoing.
Mr Escalante founded VGW Holdings and has an estimated fortune worth $3.16 billion, according to Business News' Rich 100, which ranked him as WA's 10th-richest person.
The court has already amended Mr Escalante's bail arrangements earlier this year.
In February, a condition which prohibited Mr Escalante from being within 500 metres of a departures building was amended.
The amendment removed the 500-metre requirement and changed the condition to "not to leave Western Australia or enter an international departures building".
