Western Australia's public universities have much to celebrate in Quacquarelli Symonds' latest subject rankings, with the University of Western Australia notching up dozens of entries as a top-50 subject provider.

That's despite Australia's universities reporting an overall decline in their subject rankings this year.

Curtin University was by far WA's best performer in an individual subject, with its mining and mineral engineering subjects ranking second out of all universities assessed.

UWA similarly performed well on this measure, coming in fifth place, while managing the most number of entries across subject rankings at 37.

Curtin by comparison made 30 entries in individual subject rankings.

"The Australian higher education system, the nation’s third-largest export, remains globally competitive," Ben Sowter, QS's research director, said.

"However, Australia should maximise every opportunity to rebuild its prominence as a top destination for international students, as the Covid-19 pandemic has decimated the sector.”
