A Port shaped on connection and change
The Port of Geraldton’s story began in 1840 when the first vessel, the HMS Champion, arrived in the waters off the Mid West coast.
For more than 180 years, the Port has evolved alongside the region it serves — adapting to the changing needs of local industries and providing an important connection between the Mid West and global markets.
From its early role supporting agricultural exports to its position today as a diverse regional trade gateway, the Port has grown alongside the industries that have helped shape the region’s economy.
That history is one of continuous adaptation. Generations of investment have transformed the Port from a small coastal trading facility into a modern multi-user port supporting some of Western Australia’s most important industries.
Supporting the industries that drive the Mid West
Today, the Port of Geraldton supports a diverse range of sectors including agriculture, minerals, energy, fishing and tourism. It provides critical infrastructure for exporters, connecting products from the Mid West with customers across Australia and around the world.
The Port’s strong performance in 2025/26 reflected the importance of reliable regional infrastructure, with record trade throughput of 21.56 million tonnes.
Behind that figure are the businesses, customers, suppliers and communities that rely on the Port every day. Grain growers, mining companies, logistics providers and marine operators all depend on an efficient and resilient port to move products through the supply chain.
Investing in the next chapter
As the Mid West continues to grow and diversify, ensuring the Port has the capability to meet future demand is an important part of supporting the region’s economic contribution.
The $350 million Geraldton Port Maximisation Project (PMaxP) represents one of the most significant investments in the Port’s history. The project is focused on strengthening the capability of the existing Port of Geraldton by improving reliability, efficiency and resilience.
Rather than creating a new port footprint, PMaxP is about making the most of the infrastructure already in place and ensuring it continues to meet the needs of customers and industry.
Strengthening reliability for the future
The project includes construction of a new tug facility, a breakwater extension, the new Berth 1, road infrastructure upgrades and enhancements to cargo handling capability.
The surge protection breakwater will strengthen operational resilience by reducing the impacts of challenging weather conditions, while Berth 1 will support future cruise opportunities and enhance the Port’s capacity to accommodate larger vessels.
Upgrades to road and cargo handling infrastructure will improve the efficient movement of goods, support better environmental outcomes and help customers operate more effectively through the Port.
Mid West Ports Chief Executive Officer Damian Tully said the investment continued the Port’s long history of adapting to support the region.
“The Port of Geraldton has always evolved alongside the industries it serves. Our focus is on investing in the infrastructure we have today to ensure we can continue supporting customers, enabling trade and creating value for the Mid West,” Mr Tully said.
A region of opportunity
The Mid West’s economic potential extends beyond its established industries. The region is attracting interest across resources, renewable energy and emerging sectors, creating new opportunities for the future.
While developments such as Oakajee present significant long-term opportunities for the region, ongoing investment in existing port infrastructure ensures the Mid West has the capacity and capability to support growth and emerging trade opportunities.
In parallel with major infrastructure investment, Mid West Ports continues to focus on safe, efficient and responsible operations. Recent initiatives include improving water efficiency across port operations, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and continuous operational improvement.
These initiatives form part of Mid West Ports broader commitment to continually improving how the Port operates while delivering value for customers and industry.
Continuing a legacy of adaptation
The story of the Port of Geraldton is ultimately a story of connection — connecting industries with markets, businesses with opportunities and the Mid West with the world.
As the region enters its next chapter, Mid West Ports is building on more than 180 years of history by investing in the infrastructure, capability and partnerships needed to support the future.
“Regional ports are an important part of Western Australia’s economic foundations. By strengthening the Port of Geraldton, we are helping ensure the Mid West remains connected to global markets and prepared for the opportunities ahead,” Mr Tully said.
