Sedan and SUV models of Tesla electric vehicles have jumped in popularity during 2022, though overall car sales in the state have dwindled.
That’s according to new data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries released this morning, which recorded 8,784 new vehicle sales for August and 69,908 for the year to date.
It represents a 6.5 per cent decline on prior corresponding periods, respectively.
Business News understands the majority of vehicle sales are reported as when they are delivered to a buyer, though that metric can vary across manufacturers.
According to the report, 221 Teslas were sold during August out of 623 for the calendar year so far, compared to zero sales this time last year.
Sales include 168 Tesla Model 3s, the company’s sedan model, which has shown a surge in popularity in the medium category for vehicles priced at more than $60,000.
For the month of August, the Model 3 accounted for 72.1 per cent of all car sales in that category and 53.3 per cent for the year to date.
Second to the Model 3 was the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which recorded 12 sales for the period and took 5.2 per cent of the market.

A total of 53 Tesla Model Ys were sold in August, accounting for 31.2 per cent of the 170 vehicles in the group.
Overall, Toyota retained a dominant market share in Western Australia, with 2,204 delivered to customers in the month out of 19,153 for the year to date.
Sales are down 2 per cent compared to this time last year.
