Govt writes-off $440m IT project

The state government has decided to write off a $440 million investment in its Office of Shared Services, announcing today that it is abandoning the plan to centralise finance, payroll and procurement functions in one agency.

The under treasurer tied his job to the success of this project and said he would resign if it failed. I guess we can expect news of his resignation shortly then... what's a $400K pa scalp compared to a $440 m failure???

This is highly likely to be the usual government IT incompetence mixed with pure employee sabotage plus opportunistic behaviour from the prime supplier. Having dealt with road-blocking IT empires in the Health and Education departments, this is what can only be expected.

The only sensible thing the Buswell/ Barnett Government has done so far. But completely conflicts with the centrallising/ power huingry ethos of every other adminstrative reform they're hell-bent on. How about they drop their nonsensical determination to centrallise administrative activities in government.

Meanwhile in other news, who cares if foundation works at Burswood will cost an extra $100M or so, or if collaborative university funding is stalled. When we get lousing investment decisions like these, we know the government has simply got Too. Much. Money.
