Old enemies East and South Fremantle could soon share the same home ground, with the City of Fremantle set to consider a redevelopment funding proposal at Fremantle Oval.

The plan has been put forward by the two clubs, the Department of Sport and Recreation and the WA Football Commission in conjunction with the Fremantle Dockers and the City of Fremantle.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said a focus of the redevelopment plan would be to ensure the oval became a community facility.

"A joint initiative group with representatives from all parties met in late July to discuss and agree to a set of values which will guide the process from here,” he said.

“We all agreed there was a golden opportunity to create a sustainable WAFL centre of excellence at Fremantle Oval where tenants could co-exist profitably and positively in a redeveloped modern facility.

“We also agreed the new development would be designed as a multi-purpose year-round community facility that locals would be proud to call their own."

If the plan is approved by Fremantle council, consultants will start work on the plan with a final concept to be determined by midway through next year.
