Perth company Empired has been awarded a $46 million contract to provide and operate the core IT infrastructure for Main Roads Western Australia's traffic control and corporate business systems.

The contract, to start on November 1, replaces the firm’s previous deal, a five-year arrangement secured in 2008 and worth $25 million.

It means Empired remains responsible for managing the state’s second largest optic fibre network, a range of real time SCADA systems, two data centres, and more than 2,200 workplace devices.

The new contract is for a three-year term with a two-year option to extend, and brings Empired's total major contract awards to about $96 million during the past two months.

"I am delighted that over the previous five years, Empired has been recognised by Main Roads as a reliable and innovative partner that has contributed toward Main Roads’ key business goals," Empired managing director Russell Baskerville said

"I am very proud that this reputation has provided Main Roads with the confidence to award Empired a $46 million contract that is critical in supporting the efficient operation of one of Western Australia's largest and most critical state-owned assets."

Main Roads is responsible for WA's highways and main roads, which represent almost 30 per cent of the state's total road assets.

It is one of the largest geographically spread road agencies in the world, covering 2.5 million square kilometres.

"It was reassuring to award this new contract to Empired as this is the first time that Main Roads has awarded its infrastructure services support to an incumbent since we commenced contracting out these services in 1996," Main Roads head of information management Geoff Wilson said

Empired shares are trading at 78 cents, down 1 per cent as of 7:45am, WST.
