Town of Cambridge mayor Keri Shannon is suing the nation’s peak town planning body and its local president for defamation over two articles she claims injured her reputation and caused her substantial stress.

The writ was formally lodged in the Supreme Court this week, with Ms Shannon naming the Planning Institute of Australia and WA president Vicki Lummer as parties to the action.

The claims centre around the publication of two letters to the editor that allegedly appeared in the Post Newspaper in editions printed in May 2021 and March 2022.

Copies of the letters, obtained by Business News, indicate they were distributed in response to remarks the mayor had made in prior editions.

Ms Shannon is now dragging the two to court, claiming in the writ that they are liable for both the publication and republication of the articles.

In the writ, she claimed her personal and professional reputation had been injured as a result of the letters published and had caused her substantial damage and distress.

Ms Shannon is now chasing damages for the publication, including aggravated damages, as well as interest and the coverage of court costs.

She is also now requesting the court issue a permanent injunction restraining the PIA and Ms Lummer from repeating the defamatory matter.

Business News has contacted the Planning Institute of Australia for comment.
