Cairns trade summit in doubt

HOPES of reviving the Doha round of trade talks have been dented after EU trade representatives turned down an invitation to attend a proposed summit in Cairns next month. Negotiations in Geneva collapsed last month after the major powers failed to broker a deal on agriculture, with the US and the EU locked in a stalemate over proposed cuts to farm subsidies. Trade Minister Mark Vaile said while both the US trade chief and US secretary of agriculture had agreed to attend the Cairns summit, the success of the talks hinged on both the US and the EU reaching an agreement.
