Racecourse redevelopment plans on track
The Belmont Racecourse site could soon to be transformed into a lively precinct with tourism, recreation and entertainment facilities and featuring medium to high density residential living.
Planning Minister John Day said about 73 hectares of land would be released to facilitate near-city and transit oriented development. This land is being rezoned through an amendment to the Metropolitan Region Scheme which was tabled in Parliament today.
"The changes to the Metropolitan Region Scheme rezone the land, making way for part of this Belmont racecourse site to be developed," Mr Day said.
"The development will be complementary to the Burswood Resort Casino and other recent initiatives such as the Peninsula Project, Burswood Station Precinct Development review and the Springs redevelopment.
"It is intended that the historic Belmont Racecourse and associated facilities will remain and will be upgraded."
Mr Day said the indicative development plan for the site, which has been prepared by the developer, is subject to further detailed local structure planning.
The development site would also need to be rezoned under the local planning scheme at which time the structure plan would also be prepared by the developer, WA Turf Club.
Mr Day said further public consultation would occur during this process.
"The site is ideally located near to the CBD and has good access to major transport routes and extensive frontage to the Swan River," Mr Day said.
"Other nearby infrastructure includes hospitals, medical consulting rooms and centres, community centres, libraries and churches.
"The site is also located within easy access to employment nodes at the Perth CBD and East Perth, the Burswood Resort and commercial area and the Belmont and Kewdale industrial areas.
