Austal has announced it is negotiating to build a ferry worth more than $100 million for Norwegian shipping company Fjord Line, after the Norwegian group said it had already commissioned the local shipbuilder.

In a statement released in Norway on Friday, Fjord Line said Henderson-based Austal had been commissioned to build the ferry.

It added the vessel would be ready to enter into service from the 2020 season.

Austal confirmed today it was negotiating the potential sale of a 109-metre RoPax catamaran to Fjord Line, however the negotiations were not complete and any deal was subject to conditions.

“If these conditions are satisfied, the contract will be valued at over $100 million,” Austal stated.

The vessel would be the eighth large high-speed RoPax ferry to be built for international operators at Austal’s Henderson shipyard since 2001.

The vessel would share many of the features of the 109-metre catamaran currently under construction for Mols Linien of Denmark.

Fjord Line said the new vessel would have a top speed of 40 knots, and be able to carry 1,200 passengers and more than 400 cars.
