The growing awareness of the need for alternative fuel sources has focused attention on a wide range of options.
Aside from the biofuels industry, which is growing at a rapid rate, with several companies in different stages of building biodiesel and ethanol plants, there is also extensive ongoing development of other energy sources for vehicles.
Motor Trade Association of WA chief executive Peter Fitzpatrick (pictured above)
said there was a growing trend towards small passenger diesel powered vehicles.
“There is also a lot of work being done on electric-powered vehicles as a renewable power source and I can see the time when our vehicles will be electric powered,” he said
“Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are another option but there is a lot of work to be done and the production of hydrogen, which is produced by fossil fuels, is an issue.”
Other industry sources point to gas from coal as another potential fuel source, and nuclear energy may also be part of longer-term options.
