$9m for rural health

Residents in Western Australia's north will benefit from more ambulances and paramedics as part of the first phase of the state government’s country ambulance strategy.

That announcement comes one day after the state government launched its future health research and innovation fund, to be chaired by HBF chief executive John Van Der Wielen.

Approximately $9 million will be spent as part of the strategy’s first phase, with about $2 million being spent on six ambulances in the Kimberley fleet.

A further $2 million will be spent on placing three paid professional paramedics in the towns of Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing and Derby.

Digital technologies will also receive $6 million as part of coordinated investment in St John Ambulance WA and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Health Minister Roger Cook said he was proud to strengthen WA’s country ambulance services.

“While we have always had a long-term vision for improving ambulance services for regional residents, the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that Kimberley communities may be particularly vulnerable to pressures on services,” he said.

“Six new ambulances, along with trialing paid paramedics, will boost ambulance services in some of WA's most remote areas.

“Here, I must also acknowledge the thousands of dedicated country ambulance volunteers who are the lifeblood of many regional communities, providing more than 2.8 million hours annually.

“Improved statewide coordination will benefit communities right across country WA and continues our trusted partnership with St John Ambulance WA and Royal Flying Doctor Service.”
