Fred Chaney
Frederick Michael (Fred) Chaney AO is a former deputy leader of the Liberal Party of Australia who, until April 2007, held the position of deputy chairman of the Australian Native Title Tribunal. He is chair of Desert Knowledge Australia and sits on the board of Reconciliation Australia. Mr Chaney was born in Perth and educated at the University of Western Australia. He practised law and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in Western Australia in 1963, and in Papua New Guinea in 1964. Mr Chaney was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1997 for his service to the Aboriginal community, and in 2014 was named the Senior Australian of the Year for his contribution to indigenous reconciliation and human rights.
