Malaga-based Jaylon Environmental Systems has secured a $15 million contract to supply and install evaporation pond liners for Kalium Lakes’ Beyondie sulphate of potash project.

Under the contract, sheet plastic specialists Jaylon will provide one-millimetre thick HDPE liner covering the approximately 400-hectare evaporation area at the site.

Jaylon has worked at Beyondie before, supplying Kalium with the liners to cover 10ha ponds during the project’s pilot stage in 2017.

The latest contract has already started, after a $1 million order for liners was placed in May.

Kalium Lakes chief development officer Rudolph van Niekerk said the use of an evaporation pond liner had been a much-debated topic.

“For Kalium Lakes, the cost of the supply and installation of the liner represents less than 7 per cent of the project’s total capital cost but results in an increased SOP process recovery of more than 15 per cent,” he said.

“Our lined pond design provides a pond system constructed on trafficable, off-lake surfaces, allowing for harvesting by heavy machinery months, if not years, ahead of the alternatives.”

Earlier this month, Kalium announced it received a credit-approved offer from German KfW IPEX-Bank for around $102 million for Beyondie.

The key products which Jaylon specialises in and supplies includes geosynthetic liners, tank liners, customised tarpaulins, grain covers and shadecloth items.
