Andrew Forrest’s Fiveight has applied to build a $10 million 36-room short-stay apartment development in Exmouth, to help ease accommodation pressures in the town.

The Tattarang property development arm has lodged a development application for the serviced apartments on Payne Street, near the town’s centre.

WA architect Whitehaus designed the proposed development, which includes studio, two-bedroom and four-bedroom apartments, as well as communal guest facilities.

Head of Fiveight John Meredith said the company was drawn to Exmouth’s tourism potential.

“Exmouth has emerged as one of the world’s must-see destinations,” he said.

“Yet (its) popularity has left the town desperately short of accommodation options, which is costing the community and local businesses precious income due to the fact visitors are being turned away.”

Exmouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry president David Gillespie welcomed the development, saying it would help plug the shortfall in the town’s accommodation.

“It will be welcomed by travellers and workers on a short-term basis that need accommodation,” he said.

He said the project would help create local jobs during construction and ongoing hospitality jobs once operating.

Mr Forrest’s Tattarang also plans to build an $85 million beach front eco-resort 13km north of Exmouth.

The Environmental Protection Authority is currently assessing the eco-resort proposal as well as Tattarang’s plan to realign the road near the proposed development.
