EV sales triple in 2021

More than 20,000 electric vehicles were sold in Australia this past year, with EVs accounting for about two per cent of new car sales.

That data, published by the Electric Vehicle Council, shows substantial uptake in Tesla’s Model 3, with about 12,000 of them sold in 2021.

Behyad Jafari, the council’s chief executive, said uptake had been driven by a swag of new incentives being offered by state and territory governments, calling on the federal government to introduce its own rebate scheme as well as fuel efficiency standards.

"As a wealthy, car-loving, early-adapting nation, Australia should be an electric vehicle leader,” he said.

“If we could restart a thriving manufacturing industry supporting thousands of quality jobs.

“But we need to build rapidly on this current momentum.

“After so many wasted years, Australia’s a long way back from the pack, but then again the cool thing about electric cars is how quickly they move from zero to a hundred.”

Today’s news comes as EcoGraf has submitted paperwork for approval of its battery anode material facility to be built in the Kwinana-Rockingham industrial area.

That facility carries a $98 million price tag and will produce both standard and hybrid EV batteries once operational.

Shares in EcoGraf were trading at $0.61 at 4pm AEDT.
