York Civil has been awarded a contract by the Pilbara Ports Authority for upgrades at Port Hedland, estimated to be worth about $30 million.

The company will replace the deck at Berth 3 of the port.

The project will include the demolition of the existing concrete deck and adjacent storage shed, construction of a new reinforced concrete deck, installation of new wharf fenders, and other ancillary works.

In March 2016, Pilbara Ports Authority approved upgrades for $29 million, however no contract value was released today.

The demolition and construction works will require periodic closure of Berth 3, anticipated to occur between September 2018 and June 2019.

The project is a pilot under the WA industry participation strategy, which aims to maximise opportunities for local businesses to secure work on government contracts.

PPA will monitor York’s local content participation during the project.

Originally constructed in the 1960s, Berth 3 is a multi-user berth primarily used for the export of salt and the import of fuels to service the Pilbara region.
