Brisbane-based software and consulting firm Polymathian is bringing its brand of industrial mathematics to the WA market after recruiting Boston Consulting Group’s Michael Dallimore.

Mr Dallimore will lead Polymathian’s push into mining and other heavy industries such as oil and gas, rail and shipping in WA.

He was one of the founders and directors of Perth-based simulation modelling firm TSG Consulting, which was acquired by BCG in 2019.

Mr Dallimore spent 16 months working for BCG’s analytics and data science division GAMMA before switching to Polymathian.

“I was super impressed with how they had grown the company over the last eight years,” he said.

“It reminded me of the early days of TSG, their culture and how engaged they were.”

Polymathian was established in 2013 and has grown to have 35 staff, mostly in Brisbane

It applies mathematical optimisation to create decision support tools; i.e. software that can make decisions related to complex planning and scheduling issues.

“They are unmatched in applying optimisation techniques in the real world and turning that into actual software tools that are robust and deliver on the promise of increased efficiency or decreased costs or increased NPV,” Mr Dallimore said.

“It’s taking the theory and the mathematics and making them accessible in an industrial application.”

Its competitors include international company Delmia Quintiq (part of Dassault Systemes) and Perth-based analytics and simulation modelling company Optika Solutions.

Polymathian director Ben Hollis said the firm had developed a range of off-the-shelf software products for different industries and needs.

“The software is licenced to customers so we live and die by our customers' success in using these tools in the real world,” Mr Hollis said.

“We’ve done a little bit of work on the west coast,” he added.

“Michael, given his experience as a TSG founder and his knowledge of simulation and optimisation, is a fantastic opportunity for Polymathian to do more work in the west.”
