Pindan to build $5m Fitzroy courthouse

A new courthouse for Fitzroy Crossing is a step closer to reality with the construction tender being awarded to building firm Pindan Contracting.

The $5.1 million courthouse project, funded by the state government’s Royalties for Regions program, is due for completion in late 2015.

Attorney General Michael Mischin said the recent population growth in Fitzroy Crossing meant the community needed new and improved justice facilities.

“The original courthouse was small and outdated and didn’t meet the needs or expectations of the local community,” he said.

“The new courthouse will be a modern and culturally appropriate facility, with a courtroom, interview rooms and office accommodation for the circuiting magistrate and support staff.

“It will complement the style of the police station next door.”

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the new Fitzroy Crossing Courthouse formed part of a comprehensive regional investment plan for justice infrastructure across the state.

“It is crucial that such capital infrastructure is improved to provide high quality, accessible justice services, enhancing the safety of Kimberley’s growing community,” he said.

“Royalties for Regions seeks to grow Western Australia’s regional areas into thriving, sustainable communities and this project is testament to the program.”

In addition to the Fitzroy Crossing Courthouse, the state government has allocated $52.5 million for a new Carnarvon Police and Justice Complex and spent $41.7 million to rebuild the Kalgoorlie Court and $41.8 million for the new Kununurra Courthouse.
