The charity behind the iconic Leeuwin tall ship has weathered the storm of administration, aided by a $3.5 million boost from Minderoo Foundation.

The Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation has exited administration following the execution of a deed of company arrangement with Andrew and Nicola Forrest’s Minderoo Foundation, including a $3.5 million grant.

A new board of directors will be appointed, to be steered by chair and former premier of South Australia Jay Weatherill, who also holds positions with Minderoo.

The charity appointed administrators from KordaMentha in August, reportedly following concerns around expenditure and cash reserves.

It owns and operates the 1850’s-style barquentine-built sail-training tall ship, named the STS Leeuwin II, and runs voyages and youth education and activity programs.

Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation also received support from the Department of Communities, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and Fremantle Ports.

Chief executive Annette Harwood will continue in her leadership role. She was appointed following former boss Carol Shannon exit in April last year.

“We want to see this incredible organisation continue to provide benefits to all West Australians including young people,” Minderoo Foundation co-founder Andrew Forrest said.

“The Leeuwin not only provides young West Australians with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate leadership, courage and resilience, it forges a deep appreciation of the ocean.

“That’s why we are providing support to stabilise operations and calling on others to lean in and do the same.”

Fremantle Ports, a major sponsor of the charity, said the ship would continue to be berthed at Victoria Quay.
