Golden West Resources says it is investigating the viability of short-term gold production at its Wiluna West project in the Mid West for next year.

The explorer had previously flagged that it would divest its non-iron ore assets into a new company which would be floated on the local bourse.

Golden West said today that is was looking at a range of alternatives in relation to its gold resources, including moving towards production.

"The Wiluna West gold deposits are within granted mining leases and within economic trucking distance of three potential toll mining facilities," the company said in a statement.

Golden West had listed in 2004 as a gold explorer but then a year later had discovered potential in Wiluna West's hematite iron deposits.

Wiluna West has a contained gold resource of 87,000 ounces.
