Geraldton builder wins prison contract

Crothers Construction has secured work on the state government’s $12.3 million Greenough female prison project.

The Geraldton-based business will build new support buildings for medical, education and industrial programs, as part of the Greenough Regional Prison’s second stage construction works.

Those buildings will be complete by mid-June next year.

Corrective Services Minister Francis Logan said the compound would make a significant difference to how prisoners were managed.

It will be separated from the main prison with a pulse-energised fence, currently being built.

“The new support buildings will limit the time female offenders spend in the main prison and the pulse-energised fence is a far more appropriate barrier between the two areas than was previously in place,” Mr Logan said.

Crothers is expected to employ 110 people to complete the works, as well as 24 apprentices.

The business has operated in WA since 1896.
