Federal Police and Australian Taxation Office investigators have conducted raids across the country as part of a crackdown on fake businessses committing GST fraud.

More than 19 suspects, including people living in Western Australia, are being investigated for inventing companies and then making false GST claims.

“The ATO has stopped more than a billion dollars in attempted fraud," the ATO's serious financial crime chief Will Day said.

"This is a clear warning to individuals considering participating; you will not be successful, you are not anonymous, and you will face the consequences of your attempts."

The three days of raids followed the earlier arrest of six people in Victoria allegedly linked to the fraud uncovered by Operation Protego.

According to the ATO, people create fake Australian Business Number applications and then submit fictitious business activity statements.

“Most Australians play by the rules and expect the ATO to take action to protect Australia’s tax and super systems, and collect the revenue necessary to support the Australian community," Mr Day said.

“Operation Protego was referred to the SFCT as a priority and we will continue to take swift and decisive action against anyone taking part in financial crime."

In some instances, people provided their details to those attempting to defraud the tax system, which could result in them being charged with making false declarations and then losing their access to government payments.

Last month, some of those now facing charges were warned to come forward or face tougher penalities.
