Employees given relocation help

CORPORATE relocation of employees is no longer viewed as being the concern of just the employee.

Today, many companies help staff through the process of relocating – particularly when it involves moving interstate or overseas.

Many firms are contracting-out to relocation consultant firms such as Australiawide Relocations to help with the transition rather than doing it in-house.

Australiawide Relocations managing director Sandra Gravlee said her company could help with anything to do with relocating an employee and their family.

For a typical family package involving relocating from Sydney to Perth her company charges about $2,200.

Australiawide has 120 consultants around Australia including three in WA who help the employee find a house.

The process normally takes about three days, during which time the consultant brings the worker to and from work and shows them different areas which could suit them.

“We do more research once we have narrowed down what their needs are,” Mrs Gravlee said.

She said when considering location, consultants looked at school and housing as the one issue because often good schools were a high priority.

“We also know singles take longer than families to make up their minds,” Mrs Gravlee said.

“The days are long gone when the company tells an employee to relocate and then leaves them on their own.

“However, it is not just a hand holding exercise, because it’s in the companies interest to get the employee settled as soon as possible.”

Generally, people will rent for up to six months before making a purchase because of the transient nature of the Australia workforce.

Very few companies still have their own corporate houses apart from some banks and companies which operate in remote locations, she said.

Australiawide Relocations has about 300 companies on its books with some such as Woolworth’s and American Express spending million of dollars each year.

In WA, the firm recently helped Western Mining with its relocation needs.

At any one time, the firm is involved in up to forty relocations.
