Chalice Mining has appointed Jo Gaines as an independent non-executive director, effective immediately.

Ms Gaines is currently chair of the Government Employees Superannuation Board and a director at DevelopmentWA.

She also served as branch secretary for the Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association for more than a decade.

Ms Gaines said she was looking forward to work with the board and management team as Chalice progresses in its projects.

"I am excited to have this opportunity to join the Chalice Board and contribute to the future growth of the company, which is focused on delivering the key metals required to drive global decarbonisation," she said.

Chalice chairman Derek La Ferla said Ms Gaines would bring a broad strategic skillset to the board, as the company transition to project development.

"Jo's extensive leadership experience and expertise in the development and negotiation of public policy at the highest levels of government in Australia will provide additional capability and valuable insight to the Board," he said.

Ms Gaines was the deputy chief of staff to Premier Mark McGowan from April 2012 to March 2021.

Chalice's flagship Julimar project has faced environmental opposition due to its location which borders State Julimar Forest 70 kilometres north-east of Perth, near Toodyay.

Business News previously reported Chalice was cleared to undertake low-impact drilling over a 10-kilometre strike length at the site in May, after some opposition from environmental groups.
