CEOs out in the open

MORE than 40 prominent business leaders have signed up to take part in the 2011 Vinnies CEO Sleepout in June.

Business and community leaders give up their beds for one night to get a glimpse of what it is like to be homeless.

The nationwide event organised by the St Vincent de Paul Society will be held in Perth for the second time on June 16. In WA, there are almost 14,000 homeless people, and more than 5,000 young people who are homeless, living rough or ‘couch surfing’ every night.

Fortescue Metals Group CEO Andrew Forrest, who participated in the Sleepout last year, said that while it was uncomfortable, it was nothing compared to what the homeless experience every night.

He will join Burswood CEO Barry Felstead, Reed Resources’ David Reed, and St John of God Healthcare’s Michael Stanford.

So far, 44 people have signed up, with Benz Industries WA managing director Robert Bollen leading the fundraising tally.

Perth held its first Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout at the WACA last year, which attracted 99 participants and raised more than $470,000.

In 2011, WA aims to attract 150 CEOs and raise at least $600,000.
