World-first solar technology to be showcased at Diggers and Dealers

Mining industry professionals across Australia will have a unique opportunity to view groundbreaking solar technology firsthand by registering for a site visit on 7-8 August during the Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum in Kalgoorlie.

Earlier this month, in collaboration with ResourcesWA and CrossBoundary Energy, technology innovator Cambridge Energy commenced deployment of the world's first and only prefabricated solar tracker to Norton Gold Fields' Binduli Operations in Kalgoorlie, on a 2.3MW solar project. It is the first time the technology has been deployed in Australia.

Cambridge Energy's solar tracking technology, the NOMAD, stands out from other systems due to its prefabricated, compact design and innovative anchoring system. This minimises transport inefficiencies and enables rapid, low impact, low-cost solar projects, even in the more challenging or remote regions across Australia. Additionally, the advanced technology maximises yield – some 50% more than other prefabricated solutions – magnifying the economic and environmental advantages for mining operations.

Tom Miller, the Australian founder, and CEO of Cambridge Energy, emphasises the suitability of NOMAD’s unique design for Australia's diverse terrain. He explains, "NOMAD's simplicity, versatility, and wind rating allows it to be deployed in a wide range of conditions. Moreover, its unique anchoring system eliminates the need for piles and concrete, resulting in minimal ground disturbance and a significantly reduced ecological footprint compared to other solar options."

The integration of solar tracking within a prefabricated design is the key advantage of the technology, making it an appealing choice for mining operations. Mr Miller adds, "What sets NOMAD apart is its prefabricated design, which reduces supply chain issues and construction delays. Being pre-built and ready to deploy, local workers can easily assemble it. As a solar tracker, it generates much higher energy yields and generates less waste."

Furthermore, NOMADs are engineered for reuse, allowing companies to easily disassemble, pack and redeploy them on future projects. This ensures they not only remain a long-term investment but also contribute to sustainable practices by reducing waste and demand for new materials.

With its arrival in Australia, the NOMAD has now been deployed on five continents in a range of extreme conditions. This recent Australian deployment demonstrates the potential for mining operations to execute future energy projects simply, cost-effectively, and with less risk – regardless of location.
