Whittens wins Sedgman contract

Sedgman has awarded Perth-based concrete construction group Whittens a multi-million dollar subcontract to provide civil work at Groote Eylandt Mining Company’s Manganese mine in the Northern Territory.

Under the terms of the deal, Whittens will provide demolition, bulk earthworks and structural concrete works for Sedgman, which was recently awarded a $133 million contract to construct a sands beneficiation plant, expand port stockpile, and associated infrastructure at the mine, which is located on an island in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

In a statement today, Whittens said a concrete batch plant would be established on the island, while all materials, plant and equipment would be transported from Darwin by barge.

Director Tyron Whitten said it was satisfying to have won the contract given the volatile market conditions for construction companies.

Work is scheduled to begin in April.
