Perth Symphony Orchestra founder and creative director Bourby Webster will step down after 12 years at the helm of the not-for-profit.

Ms Webster founded Perth Symphony Orchestra in 2011, which has since grown into a well-regarded cultural asset for Western Australia.

Broadly, the organisation focuses on making the symphony experience more accessible to audiences by putting on concerts with music and venues not typically associated with the genre.

On her rationale for the decision, Ms Webster said the “time was right” and is set to officially resign on December 22 2022.

“Perth Symphony has demonstrated that orchestral music truly is for everyone,” Ms Webster said.

“The time is right for me to move on, knowing the orchestra will continue to grow, push boundaries, inspire, delight and connect – being fun, fresh and fearless in the dedicated pursuit of our mission.”

The PSO board says it had started an international search for a new artistic director, with Ms Webster to oversee PSO’s 2023 program before she leaves in December.

PSO chair Phil Thick deemed her a “champion of the arts.”

“I have worked with Bourby for almost 4 years and during that time have been so impressed by Bourby’s fantastic energy and tireless commitment not just to Perth Symphony, but to the cultural sector and the artistic vibrancy of our state,” he said.

“She is a true champion of the arts, and we are so grateful for all that she has given to PSO and WA during her 12-year tenure.”

Ms Webster moved to the role of PSO’s creative director earlier this year and was replaced as chief executive by Catherine Henwood.

“Bourby has changed the cultural landscape of Western Australia by forming a highly successful artistic organisation which has redefined expectations of orchestral concerts in every sense,” Ms Henwood said.

The announcement comes after the organisation moved from its Stirling Highway base in Cottesloe to a larger office on the same road in Claremont this month.
