New car sales in Western Australia started the 2018 financial year in the slow lane, falling 8 per cent in July as national sales continued to rise.

About 7,500 new cars were sold in WA last month, down 8 per cent for the month and 7.2 per cent lower in the year to date, according to the latest figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

While sales were down in WA, national figures continued to rise; new car sales were up 1.6 per cent across Australia last month, and up 0.4 per cent in the year to date.

Despite the sluggish local performance, Toyota continued to perform well in WA with 1,814 new cars sold, up 5.3 per cent for the month, while Hyundai again sold the second-most new cars in the state (855), although that result was 18 per cent down on its July 2016 result.

Ford sales were down 9.3 per cent with 594 units sold, while Holden sales plummeted 21.1 per cent with 482 sales last month.

Ferrari matched its July 2016 result with two new cars sold, while Lamborghini also added two new sales last month to its solid year so far, with eight units sold.

Jaguar sales lifted 15.4 per cent last month with 15 new cars sold, while Porsche sales were up 64.3 per cent with 23 sales.
