AUSTRALIA’S peak employer body has used the first WA-hosted Industrial Relations Society’s national convention to spell out its IR objectives.
Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO Mark Paterson told 300 delegates policy was directed by a system characterised by “decentralism and voluntarism”.
The ACCI’s objectives are to:
• Achieve legislative reform that will permit greater flexibility and efficiency in the
operation of the enterprise
• Convince all political parties and the
community of the necessity for further change
• Remove misconceptions and concerns about the effects of labour market change
• Secure coordination at the legislative measures taken at Federal and State levels.
Mr Patterson said the current IR climate was complex, had borderless boundaries and that no business was obligated to continue investing in Australia.
“Employers and employees have a common interest – to share in combined success,” he said.
Mr Patterson said many employers were “hardened by downsizing and changes and the lack of security”.
He said the challenge for business was to
anticipate and lead the change in a workplace environment where both sides had mutual
respect and trust.
Immediate ACCI policy objectives include the active promotion and encouragement of the use
of enterprise agreements, reduction in the
influence of awards and tribunals, encouragement of individual agreements and the promotion of enterprise development, productivity and
efficiency.
Other ACCI policy objectives include the encouragement of participative management approaches and performance-based remuneration and the development of detailed proposals for legislative change.
