Visual arts funding

THE federal government has announced a new funding program that will take visual arts on tour to regional locations across Australia.

Fourteen arts organisations will receive $1.7 million under the Visions of Australia and Contemporary Touring programs, ahead of Arts Minister Simon Crean’s release of a National Cultural Policy later this year, the first of its kind in almost 20 years.

Kimberley-based Waringarri Arts Aboriginal Corporation was one of the recipient organisations and was granted $53,400 to develop In the Saddle – On The Wall, an exhibition focused on Kimberley traditional owners and artists who worked in the cattle industry.

“We are committed to taking the great art-forms of the capital cities to the regions to ensure all Australians continue to access and participate in our dynamic arts and culture,” Mr Crean said.

“This investment will enhance the liveability of the regions and encourage greater participation in the cultural life of our nation.” 

National Cultural Policy will set the framework for commonwealth support for arts, culture and creativity for the next decade, including a strategic direction for current and future investment. Mr Crean has not specified a time of release but the policy may be announced around the time of the May federal budget.
