Up to four independents in Assembly

The Legislative Assembly is expected to have three independent members, though the final figure could be as little as two and as high as four.

The certainties include Churchlands MLA Liz Constable, who is a close supporter of Mr Barnett and is a likely minister if Mr Barnett is able to form a government.

Another certainty is former Labor government minster John Bowler, who was previously the member for Eyre.

He transferred to the seat of Kalgoorlie, which was previously held by former Liberal leader Matt Birney.

Interviewed on ABC television last night, Mr Bowler said he would deal with whichever party looked after the interests of his electorate.

Alfred Cove MLA Janet Woollard, of Liberals for Forests, is also likely to win but is not assured of success.

Foreign minister and Labor powerbroker Stephen Smith, speaking on ABC television last night, also flagged the possibility that Kwinana could fall to an independent candidate.

Town of Kwinana mayor Carol Adams had sought pre-selection as the Labor candidate but was defeated by former Labor state president Roger Cook.

She responded by deciding to stand as an independent.

Former Police minster John D’Orazio, who was expelled from the Labor Party, failed in his attempt to win the seat of Morley as an independent.
