UWA moves into top 200 world ranking

The University of Western Australia has moved into the top 200 of the Centre for World University Rankings list, while Curtin University also jumped 135 spots in the latest annual results.
According to the new list, UWA is ranked 145th among universities across the world, while Curtin moved to 400th, up from 535th.
Since 2014, when CWUR only released the top 100 universities, UWA has steadily improved (from 225th to 206th last year).
Curtin also registered a big improvement, and since 2014, when it ranked 612th, has gained more than 200 places.
Murdoch placed 870th on the list, after coming in at 811th last year.
UWA placed seventh among other Australia universities, with the University of Melbourne (57th), University of Sydney (71st) and University of Queensland (74th) making up the top three.
The rankings are based on international recognition of university alumni, the number of alumni who have held chief executive positions, international recognition of academics, research output, the quality and influence of research papers, and citations.
CWUR president Nadim Mahassen said research factors accounted for 70 per cent of a university's score.
“A key factor in the rankings is research, and the Australian institutions, despite their rise in the league tables this year, will find it difficult to compete in the future with top American and European research-intensive universities if the government does not increase its spending on scientific research," she said.
