TONY Chong joined Lavan Legal in 2010 and within two years was made the group leader for the firm’s corporate services division.

The appointment has echoes of the steep learning curve Mr Chong experienced during his time at Griffin Energy, where he oversaw the construction of the Emu Downs wind farm and the Bluewaters coal fired power station.

He also led a team in 2008 to raise and syndicate more than $1.1 billion worldwide for the Bluewaters project — identified as Australia’s project finance deal of the year by Project Finance magazine.

Mr Chong also gained valuable commercial experience at Griffin, where he orchestrated a major restructure of the group, and learned about risks and crisis management during the GFC and the subsequent collapse of Griffin Coal.

At Lavan Legal, he plans to make a one-stop shop of the corporate services division for clients, and take it to the number one spot within three years.
