The Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA has lodged a proposal to build a 24-hour care facility in DevelopmentWA’s Montario Quarter redevelopment area in Shenton Park.

MSWA has flagged plans for a three-storey high support accommodation facility offering 24-hour care onsite, on the Guttmann Approach lot for several years, with the state government having contributed $9 million in August 2020.

It is understood the project would cost about $14 million.

The development comprises of 20 sole occupancy units for adults living with neurological condition, a visitor unit, a rooftop recreation area, and apartment unit for occasional sleepover staff, friends or family for a resident in palliative care.

The application, prepared by Urbis, said the Shenton Park facility would be the 22nd site for MSWA, if approved.

“All residents of this development are wheelchair bound and have specific health requirements, which has been reflected in the design of the site,” the application said.

“The facility will also accommodate the remaining long-term residents in the Quadriplegic Centre located nearby which is now below modern accommodation standards.

“The development aims to optimise the independence of residents, providing a clear distinction from alternative institutions such as nursing homes.

“The development will be an important part of the Montario Quarter community and will continue to care for and provide the quality of life as the former hospital previously located on the site once did.”

Shenton Park Rehabilitation Hospital previously occupied the 16-hectare Montario Quarter redevelopment area.

Despite DevelopmentWA being responsible for Montario Quarter, the Western Australian Planning Commission will consider MSWA’s application as the site is within the commission's Shenton Park Rehabilitation Improvement Plan.

Celsius Property Group’s 12-townhouse project at Montario Quarter is currently in construction.

A $140 million apartment and retail complex by Iris Residential and Primewest at Montario Quarter is also underway.
