THE Department of Local Government has prepared an analysis of the problems facing local governments when calling tenders for goods and services.

Acting Local Government Minister Kim Hames said the report identified eight key areas in which problems arose in local government tendering and indicated to councils what they needed to do to ensure that they fully met their obligations.

The report also lists recommendations including the preparation of guidelines and training programs and amendments to the Tender Regulations which would be the department’s next step in improving the tender process.

Dr Hames said the main problem identified in the report was inadequate tender planning resulting in a failure to provide reasonable tender specifications.
