Technip has been picked for front-end engineering and design work at a planned 10 megawatt green hydrogen project in Northam.

Infinite Green Energy is developing the project, which will produce more than 4 tonnes of hydrogen per day.

The green fuel will be used for transport sector, particularly among local governments.

First gas is expected in 2024.

Infinite, which is chaired by former Woodside boss Peter Coleman, also operates the nearby Northam Solar Farm.

Technip managing director Gareth Philp said the business hoped to help build the future of green hydrogen in WA.

On Wednesday, Infinite was given a $100,000 regional economic development grant by the state government, and was given lead agency status for the project.

The cash was to fund a hydrogen refuelling station and a showroom for hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles in Northam.

Hydrogen Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the government had invested a considerable amount to make WA attractive for hydrogen investment.

Infinite chief executive Stephen Gauld said the state government’s moves would help WA become a global leader in renewable hydrogen.
