Sunday shopping will kick off in Joondalup from September 5 after the Governor Ken Michael and Commerce Minister Bill Marmion signed off on new retail trading regulations today.

The Retail Trading Hours Order 2010 will be gazetted in parliament on Friday and will allow Joondalup city centre shops to open on Sundays between 11am and 5pm from September 5.

Joondalup mayor Troy Pickard said the extended trading would create increased employment opportunities and provide greater choice for shoppers in the city.

"The city has persistently lobbied the current and former State Government since 2007 for extended trading hours and as Perth's major retail hub for the north-west reason, this decision is great news for Joondalup businesses, residents and shoppers alike," Mr Pickard said.

The Joondalup Special Trading Precinct is bordered by Moore Drive, Lakeside Drive, Joondalup Drive, Ocean Reef Road and the Mitchell Freeway.

Mr Pickard said the announcement would reinforce Joondalup's standing as a significant metropolitan centre.

"This will strengthen the Joondalup precinct as a sustainable tourism hub, improving visitor experiences and opportunities," he said.

"As a result, the city will have significant opportunities to brand and market itself as a quality destination of choice, improving on our many existing attractions.

"It will create a more vibrant and exciting city and will encourage and attract a variety of businesses and visitors to the north-west region of Perth.

"Becoming a special trading precinct will greatly complement the many events, concerts and festivals held in the Joondalup City Centre and will help assist Joondalup become an even more vibrant and bustling place to visit."
