An innovative design for St Brigid at Mercy College Koondoola by Murray Slavin has won the top award for interior design at this year’s awards.

The jury said Slavin Architects had created a “worshipful space”, but one to which the college’s young students and community very obviously related.

“The interior architecture of the chapel is a considered holistic resolution for a multi-use building from brief, research and design through to the detailing of construction,” the jury said.

“The building expresses a depth of understanding of liturgical and spiritual symbols based on research and dialogue. Yet this sophistication belies the modest price achieved through the concerted efforts of the architect in managing the prime costed contract.”

Mr Slavin said he was delighted with this recognition as it was a tribute to the efforts and commitment of a huge team of people, including the college community, the builders, Western Projects Pty Ltd, and the specialist trades.
