Strategic role ahead for councils

LOCAL councils will play a more prominent position in the Perth of the future, according to Peter Newman.

Professor Newman told a recent WA Municipal Association breakfast councils would have to take the lead in directing how things are achieved within their boundaries in terms of infrastructure and economic development.

Professor Newman envisages Councils forming groups with neighbouring councils to coordinate strategic plans.

Each grouping would then compete with each other for C21 workers, which are those with information technology expertise.

This would mean only certain locations would have high-density living, which would provide the life style this new generation of people would want, he said.
