St George uncovers new priority WA nickel target

Interpretation of a seismic survey by nickel explorer, St George Mining has lit up another high priority nickel, copper and platinum target near the mineral rich Cathedrals Belt at its Mt Alexander project in the north-eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. The new target, named ‘S2’, stretches for more than 400 metres down dip and adds to another key target recently identified beneath the Cathedrals Belt, named ‘S1’.

Management says the large S2 target sits 350m below surface in an underexplored intrusive structure to the north and parallel to the Cathedrals Belt.

St George recently rolled out a conga line of eye-catching intercepts from several prospects along 5.5 kilometres of strike at the Cathedrals Belt.

Drilling at the Investigators prospect returned 8.49m going 5.8 per cent nickel and 2.6 per cent copper from 183.9m and 7.86m at 5.7 per cent nickel and 2.1 per cent copper from 184m.

At the Cathedrals prospect, previous hits include 7.5m at 3.9 per cent nickel, 1.7 per cent copper, 0.12 per cent cobalt and 3.32 platinum group elements from 57.8m.

A cracking 17.45m intercept grading 3.0 per cent nickel and 1.3 per cent copper was also returned at the Stricklands prospect.

The recently unveiled S1 target extends for 450m down-dip and lies beneath Investigators. The seismic properties at S2 are believed by the company to be consistent with S1.

S2 is located along an east-west trending and north dipping magnetic structure, known as the ‘Transists” belt, that shows similarities to the Cathedrals Belt, according to St George.

Curiously, previous shallow drilling by the company at the Transists belt hit ultramafic rocks, highlighting the potential for S2 to host mineralisation at deeper levels.

St George Mining Executive Chairman, John Prineas said:“Our first-ever seismic survey at Mt Alexander continues to deliver strong results with another outstanding new target for a potential massive sulphide deposit…

S2 – the new, large target identified in the Transits Belt – has the same seismic properties as S1 in the Cathedrals Belt and just like S1 is interpreted to be a target for massive nickel-copper sulphides.”

St George will now look to pierce the heart of both S1 and S2 via a diamond drilling campaign scheduled to commence early in the new year.

Meanwhile, drilling of another hole to the west of Investigators is now drawing to a close. That hole is targeting a large 250m conductor identified from a downhole electromagnetic, or “DHEM”, survey run in another nearby hole.

Further DHEM surveys are also being conducted across a series of recently completed diamond and RC holes as the company looks to define other targets for drill testing at Mt Alexander.

St George has already delivered multiple nickel-copper hits at Mt Alexander and has now added two new compelling targets for the drill-bit to run down. The Perth-based explorer could send a few pulses racing if taps into anything decent at S1 and S2 early next year.
