SmartRider trial

ABOUT 2,000 Perth commuters have started trialling Transperth’s new ticketing system, SmartRider, ahead of next year’s full roll-out. It will be Australia’s first, smartcard public transport ticketing system. Perth private company Monitor WA, which specialises in card technology, won the Public Transport Authority (PTA) tender worth more than $2 million for the provision of SmartRider cards. The ticketing hardware has been installed across the public transport system, with smartcard processors on all buses, ferries and at train stations. The existing MultiRider system will stay in place until at least March 2006 and cash fares will remain available. The new card, which is the size of a credit card, records commuters’ travels, when they get on and off, and the fare amount.
