After stepping down from 15 years leading Sandfire Resources last September, Karl Simich has joined the board of Subiaco-based Balkan Mining and Minerals.

Balkan announced the appointment of Mr Simich to the company’s board as a director with a focus on strategy, corporate development and growth.

The lithium explorer has projects in Canada and Serbia and was listed on the ASX in 2021.

In September, Mr Simich announced he was departing Sandfire after leading the company for a decade and a half (believed to be one of the longest tenures for a boss of an ASX-listed company).

He played an integral role transforming the explorer into one of the biggest copper producers with a global footprint.

Mr Simich has also held executive and director positions at mining companies Blue Capital, Namakwa Diamond Company, Blina Diamond and Kimberley Diamond Company.

Balkan managing director Ross Cotton said we has delighted to welcome Mr Simich to the board.

“With his proven track record in exploration and mining he brings invaluable skills and experience to our team,” he said.

“We look forward to working together as we advance our global lithium portfolio.”

At close of market, Balkan shares were down 6.67 per cent to trade at 42 cents at 3.39pm AEDT.

Sandfire shares were up 1.29 per cent to trade at $6.30.
