Safety is on the air

WA mining radio station Red FM has developed a series of incisive safety messages for the mining and petroleum industry in WA.

Through sponsorship from major mining companies in WA, a dozen 10-second safety messages have been produced for the station.

State mining engineer Jim Torlach said Red FM and mining companies had prepared a campaign of short, sharp risk management spots which would reach people working around the clock in the mining industry

Red FM is a commercial radio station, which transmits to the often isolated mine sites and oil rigs around the State.

The safety messages are produced through sponsorship from mining companies and are developed based on incident reports collated by the Department of Minerals and Energy.

“This is a great medium to get the message across without being too oppressive and the feedback from sites has been very good,” Mr Torlach said.

Launched in 1998, the idea for Red FM came from a miner who disliked being shut off from the world. It now has a listenership of almost 50,000 people throughout the State.
